The Portuguese FA has handed Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension after the forward left the national team camp following a rift with coach Jorge Jesus over his role.
The federation’s disciplinary council upheld the charge against the 41-year-old in full and imposed a 255 euro (£214.88; $285.83) fine.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s base in Copenhagen ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark earlier this month, accusing Jesus of twice breaking his word after remaining an unused substitute against Norway.
Jesus denied reaching any agreement with Ronaldo but left the door open for his return following Portugal’s 2-1 win.
The council’s non-professional section found Ronaldo deliberately committed an offence under Article 160(1) of the regulations.
Proceedings were opened on 9 October regarding reports filed two days prior.
The statement did not specify which matches or activities the suspension would cover, or whether time already served under a provisional suspension would count towards the 30-day sanction.
Ronaldo later apologised for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates, saying he remained available for selection after serving any punishment arising from the incident.
Ronaldo accused Jesus of going back on his word twice, stating that a broken promise to publicly explain his absence against Norway drove him from the squad.
In a detailed statement, the 41-year-old outlined his account of the dispute that triggered his exit from Copenhagen prior to Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark last week.
Ronaldo said Jesus had accepted a strategy for the forward to skip the Norway and Denmark games to manage his fitness.
However, on the day of the Norway fixture, the coach instructed him to play 30 minutes.
Portugal’s captain and all-time leading scorer said a subsequent meeting with Jesus, attended by his club side Al Nassr’s sporting director Simao Coutinho, produced an agreement for the coach to clarify events at his next press conference.
According to Ronaldo, an eight-point document was prepared saying he had never demanded playing time, had respected Jesus’ decisions and that the coach asking him to warm up without bringing him on had been a mistake.
Ronaldo said the agreed notes did not require Jesus to apologise to him but said the coach’s public remarks bore no resemblance to their private discussion.
“It was the second time he had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo said at the time.
“I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”
Portuguese FA president Pedro Proenca has said everyone within the federation wanted Ronaldo to return to the national team once the matter was resolved.
