Endemol Shine Defends David Genat From Jonathan LaPaglia Survivor Claims
A spokesperson for production company Endemol Shine Australia has completely slammed ex-Australian Survivor host Jonathan LaPaglia‘s claims about new host David ‘Golden God’ Genat, describing the reality TV star’s statements as “untrue”.
In a scathing interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, LaPaglia did not hold back when it came to his shock axing back in 2025.
To give you a recap, after serving as Australian Suvivor host for 10 years, it was confirmed that LaPaglia would be hanging up the snuffer after Survivor: Australia v the World.
“We can confirm that the upcoming season of Survivor: Australia v The World will be the last series hosted by the formidable Jonathan LaPaglia,” Network 10 said in a June 30 2025 post.
Two months after the announcement, Genat was confirmed to be the new host, making his debut as Survivor host in 2026.
While JLP has made some jabs hear and there, the now-Apocalypse host came out swinging when it came to his recent interview.
In his mammoth tea spill to the SMH, LaPaglia claimed the network said “ratings were declining, and they were looking for a way to boost that”.
“But that hasn’t worked out, has it? They’ve lost 40 per cent of their audience. Honestly, I can’t believe they’re going again with ratings like that. Those ratings are really catastrophic. And if it continues like this, I don’t see how they can sustain it,” JLP claimed.
“It makes me sad in a way because we all worked really hard on that show,” he continued.
“For 10 years, we worked hard trying to build success… It’s kind of sad to see it crumble like that. It’s not what it was. And there’s a whole bunch of reasons for that.”
Elsewhere in the interview, JLP confessed to not watching the whole of Genat’s season, as there’s no access in the US. However, he did say, “the stuff with David felt weird” before theorising that the Golden God was “fed everything in his earpiece”.
“It disconnect you from the players — and I think that’s what the audience is sensing,” JLP speculated.
“If the producer is trying to control every word that comes out of your mouth, you’re not in the moment any more,” he added before praising Survivor US host Jeff Probst.
In response to LaPaglia’s theories regarding Genat’s hosting style, Endemol Shine Australia — which produces the beloved series — said it was “untrue”.
“Australian Survivor is produced today exactly as it always has been, including how the host communicates with the cast. Nothing about that process has changed between hosts. Any suggestion otherwise is untrue,” the spokesperson said.
Genat himself has yet to respond to JLP’s claims, although the cast for Australian Survivor 2027 dropped on Sunday including a plethora of star power, from Mitch Churi to Lincoln Lewis.
However, in a previous interview with PEDESTRIAN.TV, Genat admitted that the roll out of JLP’s departure of the show was “unfortunate”.
“It was unfortunate the way things kind of went with the announcement. But again, I had nothing to do with that, and that was all kind of coming out around the time we were going away for filming,” he said.
“It was a bit of a mixed thing. And I didn’t understand, or I wasn’t aware of what was happening on Jonathan’s side of things. I just knew I had the job.
“I was happy, but Jonathan was incredible. He was such a great host, and he did so much for the legacy of Survivor, for the show in Australia and I’m just glad I got a chance to do the job.”
Yeouch. Hopefully one day, they can work it out on the remix.
