Tony Romo has been placed on indefinite leave from his role as the lead analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage, following his arrest last week on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI).

CBS Sports announced on Friday that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback would be on leave “until further notice.” JJ Watt will now join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as CBS Sports’ lead NFL team during Romo’s absence.

Mr Romo, 46, was arrested on 23 July after being stopped while driving south on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. According to a report from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Romo performed poorly on roadside sobriety tests before being taken into custody, booked, and subsequently released. He has a court date scheduled for 21 September.

The CBS Sports announcement follows the release of citations by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, which indicated an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage was discovered in the passenger side of Romo’s black Jeep during an inventory before it was towed.

Officers stopped Romo after he was observed passing vehicles in a gore area – a section separating interstate traffic from on-ramp entries – with Romo reportedly questioning the definition of such an area during the stop.

Body camera footage, released earlier this week, captured Romo informing deputies he was returning from a golf course and en route to “visit grandma and grandpa” when he was pulled over. A deputy stated he suspected impairment due to Romo’s “red glassy eyes” and an “odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.” Romo attended high school approximately 35 miles from Milwaukee in Burlington, Wisconsin.

He has served as the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017, following a distinguished NFL career from 2004-16, spent exclusively with Dallas, where he made four Pro Bowl appearances. Romo still holds the Cowboys’ franchise record for career touchdown passes with 248 and previously held the record for career passing yards (34,183) until Dak Prescott surpassed him last season.

Mr Watt joined CBS in 2023, initially as an analyst on “The NFL Today” for two seasons before teaming with Ian Eagle on the network’s second-string crew last season.

Mr Romo was not scheduled to make his season debut until the opening Sunday of the regular season on 13 September. CBS is set to broadcast a pre-season game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles on 28 August and is expected to announce its game assignments and announcer pairings for the first three weeks of the regular season in the coming weeks.
