Hampshire forced into embarrassing U-turn as they confirm they will NOT select controversial former New Zealand cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn after furious fan backlash

Hampshire have gone back on their decision to sign controversial former New Zealand cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn following fan backlash.

Kuggeleijn, 34, was amongst the 15 names posted on X for the County Championship fixture despite Hampshire not announcing the New Zealander as an overseas signing – as is usual practice.

One supporter branded it ‘a disgrace’ while another called it ‘shameful’ and ‘a new low for the club’ given the player’s past.

Kuggeleijn was charged in 2015 with sexual violation by rape and indecent assault involving two separate complainants.

Despite his acquittal following a second trial, after the first resulted in a hung jury, Kuggeleijn’s selection for New Zealand’s national team and domestic sides have repeatedly sparked public protest.

Hampshire signed the all-rounder on Tuesday, but announced in a club statement a day later that he would not actually represent the club.

‘Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club,’ the statement, released five minutes before the start of their game against Warwickshire and after the teams had been announced, read.

‘We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their views.

‘Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season.

‘We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign.’ 

Kuggeleijn has spent 12 years playing for Northern Districts in New Zealand and was supposed to join Hampshire for the final four matches of the County Championship season. 

The side are bottom of Division One, 16 points behind Leicestershire, who they still have to play.
