Alright, gather round, Crazy Rich Asians fans. If you’ve been clutching your copy of Kevin Kwan’s book and praying to the Hollywood gods for a sequel, Henry Golding has finally thrown us a bone. And it’s not just another rumour swirling around the internet — this one’s straight from the man himself.
Appearing on Watch What Happens Live, Golding was asked point blank by Andy Cohen about the status of the long-awaited sequel. His answer? “Something’s being made. I think we’re actually going to do a series. That’s what they’re trying to give us.”
He went on to add, with classic Golding candour, that they’re “aiming for like first quarter, even, next year”.
But before you start planning your viewing parties, he admitted, “There are scripts hanging around but they haven’t been passed on yet. I haven’t read anything, but I hear it’s promising.”
So, yes, there’s movement, but don’t expect to see Nick Young on your screens tomorrow.
If you’re wondering if this is just another Hollywood tease, Golding doubled down during a chat with Extra at the Old Guard 2 premiere in LA on June 25.
He revealed that he’d received a text from Adele Lim — the co-writer of the first film and now the showrunner for the series — letting him know that the production house is deep in the writing process.
According to Golding, the team is currently “sorting out, they are getting the kind of pilot episode and trying to see where all the series take it”.
Translation: the wheels are turning, but there’s still a bit of a wait before we get to see where Rachel (Constance Wu), Nick, and the rest of the gang end up.
Director Jon M. Chu has also weighed in during a Deadline interview in November last year. He also said the sequel will take an episodic format and said he is not bringing everyone back unless the script is “worth it”, which is reassuring if you’re worried about a rushed cash grab.
“I won’t bring everyone back unless it’s worth it. There’s too much on the line for everybody,” Chu said.
“I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians one was.”
It’s been six years since Crazy Rich Asians premiered and stole our hearts and solidified itself as the best plane movie (in my household at least). The film followed Rachel (Wu), an NYU professor who discovers her boyfriend Nick (Golding) is basically Singaporean royalty. Cue dumpling-making, mahjong showdowns, and a casual $239 million global box office haul.
So, if we have to wait a little longer to experience the magic of Crazy Rich Asians again, consider me sat and waiting!
