Inside the £800m Everton sale: The moment the Friedkins knew they couldn’t meet fans’ demands, why absentee owners are confident of deal before end of season – and the signings they still want to make in January

As the murky grey River Mersey rain lashed the sides of the Hill Dickinson Stadium early on Friday morning, there was little sense of yet another ill wind sweeping through Everton.

Confirmation that the club’s owners The Friedkin Group (TFG) wish to sell arrived, after all, with no great surprise following the turbulence of recent months.

Staff at the club’s Liver Building offices and Finch Farm training complex say they had no inkling of the impending statement. Even chief executive Angus Kinnear only found out two hours before the 8.22am announcement, but all of this, well, has been written on the wind.

The Friedkins’ fracture with an already suspicious fanbase opened up in August with their controversial attempt to sell highly rated teenager Harrison Armstrong – who joined the club aged five – to Nottingham Forest.

Recruitment staff had already sensed the previous appetite to invest was no longer there. A sell-to-buy approach was being adopted.

They had pulled out of a £2million deal for Manchester United’s 20-year-old forward Ethan Wheatley, wanting to prioritise money elsewhere, and far from reading the room they then sold Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City for £65m, under his market value, before what turned into a calamitous deadline day. One that left manager David Moyes with only 18 senior outfield players and one striker.

A week later Moyes would confirm he had not spoken to owner and chairman, Dan Friedkin, in the 21 months since he returned to the club as manager. He had dealt with TFG president Marc Watts, who is Everton’s executive chairman, and Rishi Majithia, Friedkin’s son-in-law, who is the owner’s day-to-day representative.

But Moyes, always mindful of how it looked, added that any successful club ‘needs to be aligned’ at the top and said: ‘We’ve got new owners in who are still feeling their way in the club. I think if we get to know each other more it will get better.’

Again, the manager wanted to meet the Friedkins during the international break to help gain better understanding of their intentions but nothing came back. The disconnect was clear.

When Dan and son Ryan appeared at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland last week alongside Everton fan Tommy Fleetwood, their silence only served to amplify concerns around the absentee owners. One that was felt by onlooking club staff.

The Friedkins will demand an asking price of around £800m, inclusive of debts of about £380m. There is confidence a sale can be completed this season, with Manhattan-based investment bank Moelis and Company leading the process.

Eyebrows were raised at the timing, considering the headline act this week continues to be the implications of Manchester City’s Premier League charges. Everton, of course, are appealing the award of £35m in compensation to Burnley for their own – and in respect to City, relatively minor – breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules which culminated in a six-point deduction in 2023.

The Friedkin Group bought 99.5 per cent of the club in a deal believed to be worth in excess of £400m in 2024, so would be eyeing a healthy profit. They viewed the club as a ‘distressed asset’, a description no Evertonian will contend, when they bought it but now believe they sell from a position of strength after Moyes moved them from relegation contenders to secure in midtable again.

TFG have put Everton on a stable financial footing, revenues have increased 50 per cent and the next accounts will show another increase. The club have moved into their new 52,000-seat Hill Dickinson Stadium – although this was effectively done on previous owner Farhad Moshiri’s watch – and they believe they have made the club a ‘blue riband’ proposition to buyers, pointing out that not many NFL or NBA teams are up for sale right now for anyone wishing to get into the business of owning a sports team.

The company is preparing to launch an NHL franchise in Houston, which would cost them about £2.6bn, and the realisation hit early in the summer that they were unable to meet the expectations of Everton’s fanbase. There is positivity though that the decision has come at the right time – echoed by approval from the Everton Shareholders’ Association yesterday.

TFG had a five-year plan and, despite casting aspersions on Moyes’s achievements last season, when his team fell ‘disappointingly’ short of European qualification, they now conveniently accept they reached their goals within two years thanks to his stewardship. They want a full sale but may consider keeping a stake.

Their other going concern, Roma, evidently holds greater personal attachment and is their priority. They were unable to make a multi club model work considering the demands and stature of both institutions.

Staff have been informed there will be no changes to the day-to-day running of the club, there will be no cost-cutting or job losses.

Faith remains in Moyes, who is in the final year of his contract, and there is still a desire to sign a striker plus one other player in January. This may be just as well if the threadbare squad can make it that far without suffering serious injuries.

Manchester United are also assessing whether Everton would sell England centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite in January.

A penny for Moyes’s real thoughts. When pressed on his lot after transfer window, the 63-year-old Scot said: ‘Sometimes you need to do something special in football and we will attempt to do something special.

‘It’s not going to be easy. You know what happens in these situations, there’s only one person who tends to get called out at the end (the manager).

‘I truly believed that, with new ownership who were in for it completely, my ambition coming back was to get Everton back to the levels they’d been at in the past – challenging for Europe.’

Asked yesterday whether he now feels let down by the club based on what he was sold on his return, Moyes said: ‘No, because I love this club. They could have sold me it at any time and I’d still have taken it.

‘But it’s for Evertonians that I am more disappointed. They have been through so many difficult periods and the last thing they really wanted to hear was this. We have done well over the last year and started to get back on the right footing.

‘I’m disappointed that Evertonians have to go through another period of “who are our owners”. It’s a great club. If anybody is out there who wants to buy it… if they want to speak to me, I’ll be the first person to tell them that it’s certainly worth buying.’
