Iran-US war latest: Trump says war is close to over as US claims ‘maritime superiority’ in Middle East

US president Donald Trump has said that the Iran war is “close to over” and claimed Tehran wants to make a deal to end the conflict “very badly”.
“If I pulled up stakes right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild their country”, Trump said of Iran in a pre-taped interview with Fox Business.“And we’re not finished. We’ll see what happens. I think they want to make a deal very badly”, the president added.
Earlier this week, the president claimed that “something could be happening over the next two days” on future peace talks after the weekend Islamabad talks proved fruitless.
With an American blockade of the Strait of Hormuz now in force, US Central Command claimed Trump’s fleet now has “maritime superiority in the Middle East”.
“An estimated 90 per cent of Iran’s economy is fueled by international trade by sea. In less than 36 hours since the blockade was implemented, US forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea,” it said.
