Former England youth international James Walker has died aged 38.
A product of Charlton Athletic’s academy, the striker went on to play 54 times for Southend United between 2008 and 2010.
The club will hold a minute’s applause in his honour prior to Saturday’s National League game against Fylde at Roots Hall.
A club statement read: “Southend United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player James Walker at the age of 38.
“On Saturday we will be conducting a minute’s applause in his honour ahead of kick-off.”

Charlton also released a statement following the news of Walker’s death which read: “The club are saddened to hear of the passing of former academy forward James Walker at the age of 38. Everyone at Charlton Athletic would like to extend their condolences to James’ family at this difficult time.”
Walker suffered a cardiac arrest in 2019 whilst teaching a PE class, resulting in severe physical and mental impairments.
Southend’s former players’ association hosted a benefit match in May 2023 to help raise money for his recovery.
The forward also had spells with Hartlepool, Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient, Notts County, Yeovil and Gillingham.
Leyton Orient posted their own message of condolence to Walker’s loved ones on social media.
“All at Leyton Orient are saddened to learn of the passing of former O James Walker,” the message began.
“Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this very sad time.”
Yeovil added: “Everyone at Yeovil Town Football Club are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Glover James Walker, aged 38. James made 13 appearances for the Glovers during his loan spell from Charlton Athletic, scoring three goals. Rest in peace, James.”
On the international stage, Walker played for England at youth level as he featured at the Under-17s Euros in 2004.
England narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the tournament after losing to a Spain side containing Cesc Fabregas in the semi-finals.
Walker also played for England at Under-18s level before switching his allegiance to Antigua and Barbuda in 2012. He made a single senior appearance for the Caribbean nation.
