Kai Trump branded ‘tone deaf’ as she shops at world’s most expensive grocery store alongside her Secret Service agent

Kai Trump has been branded as ‘tone deaf’ after shopping at ‘world’s most expensive grocery store.’

The 18-year-old, who is the granddaughter of President Donald Trump, has garnered a fanbase of more than 1.4 million subscribers on her YouTube channel in recent months, many of whom were left furious by her latest upload.

In the 18-minute segment, titled ‘I Tried the World’s Most Expensive Grocery Store,’ Trump wandered through the aisles of an Erewhon in Los Angeles, accompanied by her Secret Service agent.

The premium grocery store started in Boston in 1966 selling macrobiotic and organic foods but has more recently become a trendy spot for image-obsessed influencers, spurred by social media and a private equity deal in 2019. 

It now has eight locations in California’s most affluent neighborhoods, all with a focus on locally sourced, vegan and organic food catering to niche diets, and has become synonymous with pricey products including $26 bottle of ‘oxygenated’ water and hot sauce costing as much as $40. 

And Trump’s piece to camera left a sour taste in the mouths of many viewers who had tuned in.

‘If you guys don’t know Erewhon, Erewhon is the most expensive grocery store pretty much out there. Everything’s crazy expensive,’ she began. 

‘So, we’re going to get my favorite stuff, even supplements, whatever it may be – and then go home and try it out.’

Trump began by picking up Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer, Body Health Perfect Amino tablets and Erewhon’s own-brand Vitamin C.

Her shopping basket also included Shilajit Liquid Complex supplements for both energy and immune support as well as Erewhon’s $25 Ashwagandha tablets as she nonchalantly made statements such as, ‘Let’s just throw that in there… Let’s throw that into the mix, why not?’ 

Next, she purchased a glass jar of Medjool dates for $17.

Trump insisted, ‘One thing about me, I don’t spend a lot of money’ before heading to pick up a platter of $19.99 Ocean Plate sushi.

Swinging by the hot bar, she picked up Korean BBQ Short Rib at $42 per lb, Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower at $21 per lb and Brown Rice Balls at $20 per lb – bringing her hot food cost alone to a staggering $37. 

Then, Trump purchased a branded Protein shake bottle at $44, $10 Lavender Lemonade and $13.99 Hyper Oxygenated Water along with the famous $21 Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie touted by Hailey Bieber.

But Trump drew the line at other branded merchandise after baulking at the price of an Erewhon hoodie, telling her Secret Service agent: ‘$165 for a grocery store [merch]? I’m about to go bankrupt with this stuff. I am going to need to file for bankruptcy.’

Trump left the store and went on to taste test her products – many of which she didn’t actually like – before revealing the entire shop came out at a whopping $233.

‘That was for one grocery bag, and one meal is not even edible,’ Trump concluded as she let out a giggle. ‘That’s crazy.’

But viewers failed to see the funny side.

‘Most Americans can barely afford regular groceries btw,’ someone shared. 

‘Title might be the most tone deaf thing I’ve ever read. Like legit lmao,’ one wrote.

‘My money is spent for her to bring Secret Service,’ scathed another. 

‘Not a good look to shop at quote “the most expensive store” when regular Americans are struggling. They rub it in our faces,’ one agreed.

Several others made reference to Marie Antoinette, who became renowned for her ill-considered comments about starving French peasants, writing: ‘Let them eat cake… let them drink Erewhon smoothies.’ 

On its website, Erewhon describes itself as ‘more than a grocery store. We are a community of people who are united in our love for pure products that protect the health of people and our planet.’ 

It’s a favorite of LA celebrities including Kourtney Kardashian, Bella Hadid and even Brooklyn Beckham.
