Karmelo Anthony juror left open mouthed with shock at sight of Austin Metcalf’s body, as killer teen’s lawyers suggest victim impaled himself on knife: Live updates

A juror seated on teen killer Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial was left open mouthed as she viewed a photo of Austin Metcalf’s wounded heart on Saturday.

Collin County’s Chief Medical Examiner Dr Elizabeth Ventura presented autopsy photo evidence to jurors over the weekend, explaining that Anthony’s folding knife ‘completely went through [Metcalf’s] heart wall’ as the 19-year-old looked away from the pictures.

Anthony is standing trial for Metcalf’s murder and has maintained that he acted in self-defense during the deadly folding knife attack at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.

Defense lawyers suggested Metcalf may have impaled himself on Anthony’s knife.

The trial began last Thursday with the state resting its case on Saturday. Multiple witnesses, including several teens present at the meet, trashed Anthony’s self-defense claim and contended that he had a folding knife ready in his hands as Metcalf stood near him to push him.

The teenagers argued about seating under the Memorial High School track tent before Metcalf was fatally stabbed in the heart.

The trial is expected to last two weeks with the defense set to continue presenting its case today.

Juror left open mouthed as she reviewed photo evidence of Austin Metcalf’s stabbed heart

A female juror seated on Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial was left visibly shocked after Collin County’s Chief Medical Examiner Dr Elizabeth Ventura presented autopsy photo evidence of Austin Metcalf’s heart to the court on Saturday.

The medical examiner explained that Metcalf had one stab wound to the chest that pierced the bone in the center of his torso and the sack that surrounded his heart.

The stab wound, she said, was 2 inches in length and ‘completely went through the heart wall.’

Anthony looked away as his lawyers reviewed the photographs.

Metcalf’s parents and most of his family left the courtroom before the evidence was shown.

Metcalf was declared dead at the hospital on the morning of April 2 shortly after he was stabbed at the Frisco track meet by Anthony.

The medical examiner says the wound Metcalf sustained not survivable and that the cause of death was homicide.

Later in the day, Anthony’s defense attorney tried to suggest that Metcalf might have impaled himself on the young teen’s knife before court was adjourned.

Prosecution accuses teen of wrongly telling police Anthony was surrounded before stabbing

During cross-examination, prosecutors told Karmelo Anthony’s teammate that surveillance video proved he wrongly told police that Anthony was surrounded by a group when he stabbed Austin Metcalf.

‘Now you know you’re wrong after seeing the video back in April,’ the prosecutor said.

Prosecutors played the video for the teen and asked, ‘You were wrong, right?’

‘I’m not sure. I couldn’t tell what happened in the video,’ the teen said.

Austin Metcalf’s heartbreaking final words after he was stabbed

In opening arguments on Thursday in Karmelo Anthony’s murder trial, prosecutors said the baby-faced teen used a folding knife to stab Austin Metcalf at the time of their dispute.

Metcalf lifted up his shirt once he realized he had been knifed and exclaimed, ‘I’ve been stabbed,’ before tumbling down several rows of bleachers.

Prosecutors said his brother Hunter rushed to his aid as Anthony ran from the scene and later tried to blend into groups of kids who were fleeing the stadium.

‘If you’re scared and running away in self-defense, why toss the knife,’ the prosecutor said.

‘That knife wasn’t used to protect him from harm. That knife was used to harm another. Find this man guilty of first-degree murder,’ he continued, pointing at Anthony.

Stone-faced Karmelo Anthony listens to harrowing 911 call

The 911 call made after Karmelo Anthony stabbed Austin Metcalf was played in court on Thursday.

The call was made by Coach Joshua Rebmann, football coach at Liberty High School in Frisco, Texas, who was at the track meet.

Redmann told the operator that an athlete had been stabbed and was not breathing as people yelled in the background.

The coach could then be heard yelling, ‘Stay with me, Austin! Stay with me, Austin!’

Rebmann said he made the comment as he watched Metcalf’s eyes roll back in his head.

His last breath could then be heard in the recording.

As the phone call was played in court, Metcalf’s mother could be seen leaning forward in her seat, head down, as others in the gallery cried.

Metcalf’s father was also seen wiping away tears with a handkerchief.

But Anthony displayed no emotion as he looked straight forward and down.

Karmelo Anthony’s classmate takes the stand

The defense called a 17-year-old Centennial High School student as its first witness on Monday.

The teen, who is not being named due to his age, was a teammate of Karmelo Anthony on the track and football teams.

He testified that he spent a little time with Anthony on the morning of the stabbing and said that he seemed normal.

The teen said he was on the field warming up when the stabbing happened.

‘What caught my attention was the people looking back,’ he said. ‘That’s when I saw a push.’

‘Arms, I saw the arms go out. I didn’t know who it was and what had happened.’

He said he thought a fight might break out under the tent because there were lots of kids underneath.

Then he heard yelling. ‘It got super loud. People started standing up and were like, “Whoa, what happened,”‘ he said.

The teen testified he saw Anthony running from the area, then he saw him on the field with a coach.

‘He was crying and there is a coach comforting him,’ the teen said of Anthony. ‘He was like, distraught. I think is the best way to describe it.

‘I was hearing him say, “I told him not to touch me.”‘
