Lindsay Clancy’s bloody injuries are laid bare to jury in her children’s murder trial as medic says she was ‘critically ill’: Live updates

Eitan Negri, a physician’s assistant who previously worked in the trauma and surgical ICE unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in January 2023, was the first witness to testify.

On January 25, 2023, he treated Clancy’s multiple injuries, and he was assigned to ‘repair work’ on the lacerations on both wrists and a superficial laceration on her neck.

According to Negri, Clancy’s right wrist had a few lacerations, including one that was 3cm deep.

The cut on her left wrist was 2cm deep, he said. None of the wounds went deeper than the fatty tissue beneath her skin.

During cross-examination, Negri agreed that Clandy was ‘critically ill’ in the hospital.

DNA samples and evidence from the blood stain in the basement and the exercise bands used to strangle the children are being introduced as stipulations of fact.

The blood stain on the basement carpet has been confirmed to belong to Cora.

EMS workers previously testified that they saw blood around the face of the five-year-old girl.

This comes after Clancy agreed to the chain of custody of several pieces of evidence on Tuesday – a move that prevents the state from having to bring countless witnesses to the stand to simply enter a piece of evidence.

Clancy is staring blankly ahead in the courtroom.

She appears to breathe heavily at some points and closes her eyes from time to time.

During cross-examination, Dr. Brower told the court that the level of the anti-psychotic drug Seroquel in Clancy’s system was double what he would have expected.

He also noted that it was the only drug that was higher than the prescribed level.

The other drugs were at the therapeutic level – suggesting that Clancy could have been taking them as prescribed.

Prosecutors are pushing back on the defense’s argument that Clancy was overmedicated by suggesting that she did not take a lot of the drugs she had been prescribed.

Jurors were previously shown multiple pill bottles still containing several pills that Clancy did not take.

During day six of her murder trial, Clancy spoke for the very first time.

She agreed to a series of stipulated facts, including toxicology evidence and chain-of-custody matters.

The judge confirmed that she understood that the agreement waived her right to confront certain witnesses. The decision also allows the jury to accept those facts without additional testimony.

Forensic toxicologist Justin Brower said that all four drugs in Clany’s body were at therapeutic levels and did not show levels that he would

expect to see in a suicide case.

‘Usually people take handfuls of pills if they’re trying to kill themselves,’ Brower told the court.

When asked by prosecutors about the benzodiazepines found in her system, he found that they were also at therapeutic levels – meaning at levels they would be prescribed.

Some were even below therapeutic levels, he testified.

However, he pointed out that ‘you can’t do toxicology in a vacuum… you need other information.’

John Santos from the Massachusetts State Police was part of the search warrant team responding to the Clancy household on the evening of January 24, 2023.

In a cabinet above the stove, Santos found several notebooks, including discharge paperwork for Clancy from McLean Hospital. Clancy voluntarily entered McLean in November 2022.

Along with prescriptions for medications, Santos found a patient information sheet for postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety and a book titled: ‘Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts.’

Prosecutors then submitted a notebook titled ‘Callan Patrick Clancy’ into evidence, a yellow book that included notes from Clancy to the nanny.

Defense attorney Reddington swung in his chair and shook his head as Santos spoke, seemingly rattled by Santos’ testimony.

The trial resumed after a brief break on Wednesday morning.

Multiple drugs, including antidepressants, anti-psychotic medication, and a medication used to treat bipolar disorder, were in Clancy’s system, Justin Brower, a forensic toxicologist from Pennsylvania, told the court.

The volume and level of drugs in Clancy’s system is a key part of the case as the defense is arguing that she was in a state of psychosis – possibly triggered by being severely overmedicated.

Clancy had been prescribed at least 13 medications in the months leading up to the deadly incident. She also sought psychiatric care.

The judge announced that the court would take a brief break around 10:15 a.m.
