Melania Trump sharply distances herself from Russian oligarch who bankrolled Don Jr and Bettina’s wedding party

First Lady Melania Trump is responding to reports that a Russian oligarch accused of facilitating the abduction of Ukrainian children helped pay for Donald Trump Jr and his new wife Bettina Anderson’s lavish wedding party.

The president’s eldest son tied the knot with the 39-year-old socialite Bettina in Palm Beach, Florida, before departing for Bahamas for a wedding celebration at the end of May.

The luxurious bash on a private island was attended by several other Trump children, including Ivanka and her husband Jared, Eric and Lara, Tiffany and her husband Michael, and many grandchildren.

Following an explosive report, Don Jr and Bettina have admitted that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, who is friends with Russian President Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward their wedding party in the Bahamas.

Notably, Trump and Melania skipped their wedding festivities as the war with Iran escalated. 

Kremlev’s now-public involvement has raised concern in the East Wing as he is allegedly connected to the abduction of Ukrainian children, a personal issue for the First Lady. 

‘Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,’ a spokesperson for the First Lady told the Daily Mail. ‘Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.’

Kremlev helps lead the Russian organization Healthy Fatherland, currently under Ukrainian sanctions for its alleged role in a program of abducting Ukrainian children from occupied territories and relocating them under the guise of ‘rehabilitation’ according to a ProPublica report published Monday.

Melania Trump has been at the center of a campaign to reunite children who have been kidnapped from Ukraine and taken to Russia during the ongoing war between the countries.

President Trump hand-delivered a personal letter from the first lady to Putin in August about the issue, prompting the Russian president to respond in writing, promising to engage with her on the issue. 

As of August 2026, the campaign has reunified a total of 34 children and brought them back to their families in Ukraine.

Melania’s decision to publicly distance herself from the event speaks volumes about the impact that the news is having on the family.

Trump Jr’s brother Eric, also distanced himself from Kremlev.

‘Eric has absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name,’ his spokesman told ProPublica.

Kremlev also serves as the president of the International Boxing Association and hosted Donald Trump Jr for a panel discussion in Istanbul about boxing in December.

Kremlev’s press office told ProPublica the two men became friends based on their common interests in boxing, hunting and the outdoors.

Bettina Trump addressed the report on Instagram on Monday, confirming that Kremlev was ‘our dear friend’ that hosted ‘two incredible nights of celebrations for us’ in the Bahamas after their intimate wedding ceremony in May.

Kremlev reportedly paid to rent a private island in the Bahamas for the party and for a fireworks show for the family and their guests.

Bettina disputed the idea that accepting the generous financial support from a Russian national for the celebrations was inappropriate.

‘Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda,’ she added.

‘So, for anyone determined not to let the facts get in the way of a good story: NO CONSPIRACY, NO MYSTERY. Just a private family wedding, a wonderful weekend with friends and one hell of a party,’ she concluded.

Kremlev’s relationship with Trump Jr also raises concerns about his connections with Russia, a frequent subject of controversy for critics of President Trump.

The Trump family has appeared less concerned about the political implications of foreign business deals and connections overseas during his second term in office.

‘I prohibited them from doing business in my first term, and I got absolutely no credit for it,’ Trump told the New York Times in January. ‘I didn’t have to do that. And it’s really unfair to them.’

‘I found out that nobody cared, and I’m allowed to,’ the president added.
