My boyfriend blocked his friend after I found their flirty texts – but his response to her outbursts has me questioning our relationship

A woman who thought she had finally put her boyfriend’s emotional affair behind her says one final conversation has unravelled everything she thought she’d managed to rebuild.

After discovering years of flirtatious messages between her boyfriend and another woman, the couple almost broke up. He promised it was over, blocked his friend, and insisted he wanted to ‘protect’ their relationship.

But when the woman reached out again months later, the girlfriend discovered their final exchange – and says reading his response left her with a whole new set of doubts.

‘He blocked her, said he didn’t care about her, and said he wanted to protect our relationship,’ she explained.

‘Yesterday I found out she texted him again out of the blue.’

‘Reading through it… I still feel uneasy about how the conversation went and what it implies about how he actually feels.’

The friendship already crossed emotional boundaries

The woman said she first discovered the messages in December 2025 after becoming suspicious of the friendship.

According to her, her 31-year-old boyfriend had spent years exchanging intensely personal messages with the 26-year-old woman, whom she described as someone he had developed a ‘huge crush’ on.

She claimed they called each other soulmates, constantly texted, exchanged flirtatious and ‘romantic-coded’ messages, and maintained an emotional connection despite both being in relationships.

The conversations became even more intimate after the friend’s boyfriend suddenly passed away in 2025.

The girlfriend said she found messages in which her boyfriend admitted he’d ‘never had a connection with another woman like the one he had with her’ – including with his own girlfriend.

The other woman responded that no matter what happened in their lives, or even if they married other people, they would ‘always be together’. The discovery almost ended the relationship.

‘Our texts were discovered by my girl’

Months after he blocked her, the friend contacted him after realising she’d disappeared from his Instagram.

‘Bro. You blocked me? You ruined me. Communicate with me. What did I do to you?’ she asked.

Rather than avoiding the conversation, he explained exactly why it had happened

‘Our texts were discovered by my girl and it was hard to convince her that nothing happened. Some of the texts were not the best from my side,’ he replied.

The woman immediately blamed his relationship.

‘You trashed me. For a girl. For a toxic relationship.’

He apologised repeatedly.

‘I had to protect my relationship. I understand how you see it… and you have all the right to feel angry and sad,’ he wrote.

‘It wasn’t just friendship’

As the conversation continued, the friend accused him of abandoning her after everything they had shared together.

‘I cried my a** off because of you. I thought we would keep this friendship and I’d come to your wedding. I thought we would have seen each other grow old together,’ she wrote.

Rather than disputing her characterisation of their relationship, he reflected on how it appeared from the outside.

‘All our playfulness and borderline flirting in our texts were not convincing to prove that what I have with you is a friendship,’ he admitted.

‘It all looks like we had a crush on each other that never materialised.’

The woman disagreed.

‘What we have… it’s not a crush. It’s more than that. It’s pure love and protection and care,’ she replied.

She warned him he would one day regret ending the friendship.

‘Will it make your life happier, satisfied not knowing anything about each other? Will you not have regrets later on when maturity will kick in? … I wish you a nice life. Later on you will realise what you lost.’

‘I feel like he only stopped because I found out’

Although the boyfriend repeatedly told his friend he had to distance himself if he wanted his relationship to survive, the girlfriend said his responses were what unsettled her most.

‘He spends the entire conversation validating her anger, apologising over and over,’ she wrote.

‘At multiple points he frames the whole thing as if I forced his hand – like if I hadn’t found out, he’d have been happy to keep things going with her.’

She was equally disturbed that he never challenged the friend’s repeated criticism of their relationship.

‘She spends a lot of the conversation guilt-tripping him and, at one point, effectively calling our relationship “toxic” and me the reason he’s “trashing” her.’

Although friends pointed out that he ultimately maintained the boundary and refused to continue the friendship, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still unresolved.

‘My friends point out that he DID keep the boundary in the end… and that this is a good sign. I see that too, but I still feel uneasy,’ she said.

‘Am I overreacting by still having a problem with this, or are these legitimate red flags even with the boundary technically being held?’

When does a friendship become emotional infidelity?

As conversations around emotional cheating continue to grow, many relationship experts argue that secrecy, emotional dependence and romantic intimacy can be just as damaging as physical infidelity.

Unlike traditional affairs, emotional affairs often develop gradually through constant messaging, private jokes, emotional reliance, and language that would normally be reserved for a romantic partner.

For many couples, the issue isn’t whether someone has friends of the opposite sex – it’s whether those friendships begin to compete with the primary relationship.

In this case, the messages themselves appeared to acknowledge exactly that.

While the boyfriend ultimately chose his relationship, his own admission that their conversations looked like ‘a crush that never materialised’ left his girlfriend wondering whether he had truly chosen her – or whether he had simply run out of options.
