NFL receiver, 24, mysteriously retires just two years on from getting drafted… after missing practice for ‘personal reasons’

New Orleans Saints star Ja’Lynn Polk has retired from the NFL at just 24-years-old.

The Saints placed the wide receiver on the reserve/retired list on Sunday, ending his career just two years after he was selected 37th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The decision came as a shock to fans, as Polk had been participating in training camp and appeared positioned to earn a key spot in New Orleans’ wide receiver rotation.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore told reporters that Polk had been excused from Friday and Sunday’s practice sessions due to ‘personal reasons’, before his decision to step away was formalized.

Though injuries had previously been a concern during his time with the New England Patriots, reports suggest that injuries were not a major factor in his decision.

His rookie season in Foxborough proved difficult, however, as he struggled for consistency in New England’s offense, finishing his debut campaign with 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns across 15 appearances.

After suffering a season-ending shoulder injury during the 2025 preseason, New England traded Polk and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick to the Saints in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick last September.

New Orleans acquired Polk with the intention of guiding him through his rehabilitation so he could compete for a roster spot in 2026.

Despite displaying strong form throughout OTAs, minicamp and the early days of training camp, Polk’s sudden retirement brings his NFL career to an early close after just 15 regular-season games.

Polk’s decision comes just over a week after Arizona Cardinals star Travis Vokolek announced his retirement from football at the age of just 28.

The tight end suffered a horrific severe neck injury last October that saw him carted off the field and brought his 2025 season to an abrupt end.

Vokolek revealed that the injury is also bringing his career to a brutal end, forcing him into an early retirement.

He shared a post on social media, revealing that doctors had advised him to retire from the sport.

‘After numerous visits with doctors and neurologists over the past couple of months, I have been advised to medically retire from the NFL due to a serious neck injury that I suffered this past season,’ he wrote.

‘I am extremely grateful and blessed to have been able to live out my childhood dream of playing football at the highest level for the past three years. Football has taught me many life lessons and given me unforgettable memories.

‘I am forever grateful to all my teammates, coaches, trainers, and others who have supported my family and I along the way. A sincere thank you to the Arizona Cardinals training staff for being first class with the care and support they provided my family and I during this hard time.’
