Nicole Kidman says she will never be ‘best friends’ with her daughters – and reveals the touching support Faith, 15, offered her for Practical Magic 2 screening in Australia

Nicole Kidman has revealed that she’s not really what you’d call a ‘cool mum’. 

The Australian actress takes parenting very seriously, and says she never treats her daughters, Sunday, 18, and Faith, 15, like she’s their mate rather than their mother. 

The 59-year-old explained that she is a ‘rock’ for her kids, but that is a very different role to being a ‘friend’. 

‘You’re a mother first. You’re a mother, but you’re also a guide, a mentor, a safe haven, the place you can always come home to,’ she told The Daily Telegraph. 

‘But ultimately, as I always say to my kids, no, I’m not here to be your best friend, I’m here to actually be the person who is your rock.’

Kidman also shared the touching reason her teenage daughter Faith was by her side at the Practical Magic 2 screening in Sydney on Friday. 

While her older daughter, Sunday, was unable to attend, Faith ensured her mother did not travel to Australia by herself.  

‘Sunny is working right now, so she wishes she could have been here, but Faithy got on the plane with me and she’s like, “I’m coming, you’re not doing this alone”,’ Kidman explained. 

Kidman previously shared that she never fails to carve out precious time for her teenage daughters.

The star revealed how she prioritises her family even with her wildly busy filming schedule during a chat with Extra and fellow Lioness co-star Zoe Saldana.

The topic came up after Saldana, who has twins Cy and Bowie and son Zen with husband Marco Perego-Saldana, shared how the Lioness cast built a tight-knit bond over multiple seasons and spent time together outside of filming by going to concerts, riding horses and celebrating Thanksgiving together.

But Kidman always flew home to Sunday and Faith, immediately after wrapping her scenes on the action-packed spy thriller.

‘Nicole would if she was there, but as soon as Nicole finishes, she flies home to her family. And it’s so beautiful to see, too,’ Saldana praised.

Kidman explained: ‘I go home to my family. I’ve got one child in junior year and one who’s a freshman. 

‘So, I was like, “Okay, I got to be there taking care,” you know? Multitasking, right?’

The Oscar winner shares her younger daughters with country music star Keith Urban, 58, from whom she separated in September 2025 after 19 years of marriage. 

She retained primary residential custody after the couple’s divorce was finalized in January.

Kidman also has two children, Bella, 33, and Connor, 31, with ex-husband Tom Cruise.
