Nottingham Forest ban ‘misogynistic’ chant – and tell fans they face ‘education sessions’ if they sing it

Nottingham Forest are the subject of fan discontent after banning a ‘misogynistic’ chant and warning their supporters of consequences if they continue to sing it.

The song, which references ‘t**s and f***y’, has been sung by the Forest faithful for a significant period.

But on Saturday afternoon, the club released a statement titled ‘a message to supporters’, where they insisted that this must no longer be the case.

‘Nottingham Forest is proud of the inclusive environment it has worked hard to create, and remains committed to ensuring everybody feels welcome, respected, and valued,’ they said.

‘We recognise that a particular chant has a long history among small sections of our support. While it is only sung by a minority of supporters, the potential impact of this chant and its misogynistic nature cannot be overlooked.

‘This issue has also been raised by Nottinghamshire Police and Kick It Out, and after discussing further with our Fan Advisory Board, we are committed to delivering a united message: any form of discrimination, including misogynistic chanting, will not be tolerated.’

Forest added that those found to be singing the song could ‘face education sessions or further action, including club bans and being placed on acceptable behaviour contracts.’

They added: ‘The club may also face sanctions if such chanting continues.

‘We ask all fans to consider the impact of their words and help ensure Nottingham Forest remains an inclusive environment where everyone belongs.’

However, the statement left some fans confused and frustrated, with several taking to social media to express their thoughts.

One supporter said: ‘Pretty sure that chant started because of the massive population of females compared to males in the 60-70s? Older fans could well correct me on that though. The majority of female fans around us sing it as well.’

Others used their own experiences to suggest the club’s decision was wrong as one said: ‘As a mum of boys I don’t like this chant. But I’d rather live in a world where people are free to say things I don’t like.’

Another fan wrote: ‘Modern football eh. This song has been sung for decades. I started going in 1986 and it’s more of a twist on the myth that Nottingham had a ratio of 4 women to every man.

‘And before anyone jumps on with abuse I take my two teenage girls who don’t get offended by it.’

Forest are next in action on Sunday afternoon when they host Arsenal at the City Ground.
