Pakistan’s cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to promote Army Chief General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, Reuters has reported, citing an official statement.
The decision comes at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan remain high. Recently, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), in response to a Pakistan-backed terror attack in Pahalgam that killed several civilians.
Following India’s strikes, Pakistan responded by targeting civilian areas, though the Indian Army neutralised those attempts.
After four days of military conflict, both sides agreed to halt operations following a hotline conversation between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan on 10 May 2025.
