Tottenham missed out on a significant boost to their hopes of Premier League survival as they squandered two points against Leeds United.

After West Ham’s dramatic defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, the door was open for Spurs to extend their advantage over their relegation rivals to four points with just two games to go.

They looked to be on course for victory, too, when Mathys Tel curled home in stunning fashion, only for the Dutchman to concede a penalty with an ill-conceived attempt to clear acrobatically from his own box.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s resulting spot-kick gave West Ham renewed hope of staying up, and could be a huge twist in a thrilling battle at the bottom with Leeds and Nottingham Forest both now safe.

With Wolves and Burnley both relegated, here’s how the rest of the crucial relegation run-in is shaping up:

Tottenham Hotspur

Position: 17th | Played: 36 | Points: 38 | GD: -9

19 May – Chelsea (A)
24 May – Everton (H)

Where to pick up points? Having escaped the bottom three, to drop two points against Leeds would have been a real disappointment. Chelsea next week will be coming off the FA Cup final, though are still in the chase for Europe, while Everton, too, might have places to play for.

West Ham United

Position: 18th | Played: 36 | Points: 36 | GD: -20

Remaining fixtures:

17 May – Newcastle (A)
24 May – Leeds (H)

Final straight? After late drama against Arsenal, a trip to Newcastle and a home clash with Leeds to finish the season are far from unwelcome fixtures as West Ham look to avoid the drop.

Verdict?

It is going to the final day…surely? If West Ham beat Newcastle on Sunday, it will pile the pressure on Spurs ahead of a meeting with Chelsea in midweek. Equally, though, a defeat at St James’ Park would allow Spurs to secure safety with a game to spare.
