Promising duo look to make their mark at Gosford
Two promising and lightly raced three-year-olds prepare to take the first crucial step back when they return at Thursday’s Gosford meeting.
Hereward and Good Hotspur are both trained at Rosehill, and neither has run since May when finishing off sparingly raced and learning campaigns.
Racing returns to Gosford on Thursday.
Ahead of a returning showdown in a Super Maiden Plate over 1200m, both are capable of lighting up the clock on very fresh ground.
Gosford hasn’t raced for nine weeks, and with dry and sunny weather set to provide a firm surface, the track should be in fast order.
Certainly Good Hotspur, an exciting colt by Group 2 winner Calyx in the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou stable, is capable of running time first-up for nearly six months.
After being narrowly beaten in a two-year-old feature at Newcastle late last year, Good Hotspur was put away until late February when he finished off OK from the back at Canterbury.
But the expected promise arrived next start when he ran home nicely in the Group 3 Pago Pago in March, finishing three lengths from Skyhook who then finished less than four lengths from the winner in the Golden Slipper, and more recently a close and luckless fourth in the Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400m as a three-year-old.
Good Hotspur was again spelled before reloading with two solid trials late last month.
He drew wide for his return at Gosford, but in a race where there should be enough pressure and tempo up front to allow him to slot in, his final 400m will be much anticipated.
