Rogue golf instructor’s shock admission after he allegedly tried to mow down a couple and their dog with his $85,000 Toyota in road rage row

A golf instructor who allegedly tried to run down two strangers and their dog has pleaded guilty to negligent driving and recklessly damaging a public park – but will fight five other charges.

Darren Peter Golsby, 50, was arrested after he allegedly tried to ram the couple and their staffie with his $85,000 black Toyota Kluger at Riverine Park in Arncliffe, in Sydney’s south, on Easter Sunday this year.

Police allege the incident unfolded after an argument broke out between Golsby and the man over the golfer’s driving, before the father-of-two chased them through the park with his car for 20 minutes, according to court documents.

The court was told police were called to the intersection of West Botany and Spring St, in Arncliffe, about 8.20am on April 20 to reports of alleged predatory driving.

Police allege the couple were walking their dog on the verge when they heard Golsby loudly revving his Toyota Kluger behind them.

It’s alleged Golsby narrowly missed them as he drove past, sparking an argument between him and the man, the court was told.

The golf instructor allegedly followed the couple into Riverine Park, before driving towards them several times, forcing them to jump out of its path to avoid being hit.

The couple were not hurt during the incident, but their dog was treated for a minor injury.

Golsby was arrested by police at the scene.

Online, Golsby describes himself as an ‘entrepreneur’ who has been a golf instructor for more than 25 years.

According to his website, he has worked in operations, lessons, customer service, and as a sales assistant and manager at various golf clubs across Sydney, Canberra, China, and Singapore.

‘If you are confused by a deluge of conflicting information, suffering from inconsistency, lack the distance you’d like to have, or can’t get rid of your pulled irons and sliced wood, you are not alone,’ his coaching page reads.

‘I offer professional golf lessons in Sydney to help you build your swing and improve your game.’

The Daily Mail understands prior to the incident Golsby coached amateur golfers within Barton Park Golf Range, located within Riverine Park, but was not a formal employee.

Golsby was taken into custody at the scene and charged with seven offences before being granted bail the following day.

Under his bail conditions, Golsby is banned from entering Riverine Golf Park or being within 150m of it.

He appeared at Sutherland Local Court on September 16, where he pleaded guilty to two charges – negligent driving and destroying or damaging property – relating to the incident on April 20.

Those charges relate to Golsby driving negligently along Kingsway, Caringbah, between 7.40am and 7.47am before recklessly damaging the sporting field grass at Riverine Park, owned by Bayside Council, between 8am and 8.20am.

Golsby has also pleaded not guilty to three counts of stalking or intimidation intending to cause fear of physical or mental harm, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, and driving a motor vehicle in a manner that menaces another person.

He will return to court on March 9, 2026.
