Sporting vs Arsenal LIVE: Latest score and updates as Havertz snatches last-gasp winner

Arsenal do what is required, and the jubilant question now is whether it is also what they really need.

They just have a win again, a good feeling. You could see it in the joy of the players after Kai Havertz’s finely taken goal. You could see it in the relief of more superb David Raya saves.

Here’s Miguel Delaney’s report from the Estadio Jose Alvalade as Arsenal leave it late to seize the advantage in their Champions League quarter-final tie with Sporting:

“I talk about identity and other things that define this team and I definitely saw that tonight,” he tells Amazon Prime. “It is half-time. We have to finish this in front of our people. And then we can dream.”

Arteta, speaking to Prime, says of his subs: “A magic moment from the finishers, the winners again. Beautiful. That’s the impact you need and they certainly did that tonight.”

“To score a late goal is always nice,” Havertz tells Amazon Prime after his matchwinning moment. “We take that result. Still a lot of work to do next week.”

And that is a rather fine win for Mikel Arteta’s side against a team that had last been defeated at home in August. The bench depth makes a difference on a night of few chances and plenty of patient build-up play.
