Sushi restaurant fires employee after disgruntled homeowner releases video of her looting Halloween candy: ‘Pathetic’

A sushi restaurant has fired one of its employees after she was caught looting Halloween candy.

The scandal began after disgruntled homeowner Taylor Wilson took to Facebook to share footage captured by her video doorbell.

Wilson, based in Helena, Alabama, had left a bowl of sweet treats out on her porch for passing trick-or-treaters but was stunned to see two adult women approach with empty bowls in hand.

One of the visitors grabbed a large handful of goodies before the other, who was wearing a shirt carrying a logo for Sakana Sushi Bar & Grill, scooped up three – nearly clearing the entire stash.

Wilson first took to her personal page to share the clip alongside a lengthy caption that read: ‘It’s people like this that really ruin holidays for me… nothing but GREEDY.

‘And to be a grown adult having the audacity to do this just blows my mind. SMH. What a shame. Literally pathetic. Ugh I’m so mad.

‘HEY SIRI.. play Pray For You by Jaron and the Long Road to Love.’

She then took to the dedicated What’s Happening In Helena page to reshare the clip where she tagged the restaurant and asked: ‘Is this one of your employees??’

And viewers were quick to express their own outrage as one commented: ‘That’s disgusting behavior!’

‘This is just pitiful…’ another added.

‘Integrity is scarce these days. I’m sorry this happened to you!’ a third said.

In the aftermath, Sakana, based in Hoover, subsequently took to its business page to state that it was ‘aware of the video circulating on social media.’

‘We take this matter seriously and want to make it clear that we do not condone any behavior that takes away from children or negatively impacts our community,’ the statement read.

The all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant then thanked those who brought it to the owners’ attention and apologized to ‘anyone who was upset or disappointed by what happened.’

But the saga did not stop there.

Just hours later, the restaurant confirmed that the woman taking the candy was an off-duty employee.

In a final post about the controversy, the restaurant said that they had initially given their employee the benefit of the doubt before being told by Wilson that she had been 'untruthful'

Its follow up statement said that the employee had ‘personally reached out to the affected household, sincerely apologized and returned all the candy.’

However, Wilson disputed Sakana’s account and claimed that it was the other woman in the video who had actually apologized.

In a final post about the controversy, the restaurant said that they had initially given their employee the benefit of the doubt before being told by Wilson that she had been ‘untruthful.’

‘We do not tolerate dishonest behavior in our restaurant… We have decided to part ways with her,’ it wrote.

Sakana concluded by saying it was now reaching out to the homeowner to rectify the situation and would be offering a discount for every guest for the next two weeks ‘to give back to the community.’

Wilson has since told the Daily Mail: ‘It sucks that some people are blaming me for the candy being taken and for her getting fired but I didn’t know that I needed to stand outside all night and guard my candy from grown adults.

‘I don’t see how people don’t realize that when you wear your uniform outside work, you represent your company, so it’s not my fault that her workplace was involved in this.

‘Initially her workplace wasn’t going to fire her, they decided to terminate her because she lied to them about apologizing to me.’
