The best foundation advice for those with combination skin

In partnership with MAKE UP FOR EVER.

Managing combination skin is one of beauty’s big challenges, especially when it comes to foundation. If you use a formula that’s too luminous, it can move around or look super shiny come midday (and not in a good way). Powder can help, but it’s another step and can, in some cases, mess with the finish. Matte foundations however can over-dry the skin, causing it to look flat, rough or dull.

So what do we do? Fortunately, beauty innovation is all around us and there are foundations specifically developed for all skin types, including combination. They balance moisture with radiance and long-lasting shine control. Not an easy find, but it does exist. Said formulas, plus the correct skin prep and strategic application make it easy to achieve a base that’s fresh but balanced all day (I’ve tried).

The RUSSH guide to foundation for combination skin, below.

What is combination skin?

Combination skin is a common skin type where different parts of the face behave differently in terms of oil production. Usually, the t-zone where there is a higher concentration of sebaceous glands (the nose, chin and forehead) might appear shiny during the day, whereas the cheeks are normal to dry. So essentially, it’s like dealing with two skin ‘types’ at once.

What is the best foundation for combination skin?

The best foundation for combination skin should ideally offer lightweight moisture while balancing excessive oil production.

It’s a mix that’s actually difficult to find. Many popular formulas right now are focused on a glazed finish, which is fine for drier complexions, but if you experience shine, it can end up moving around your face or looking wet (unfortunately this has happened to me on more than one occasion). Matte foundations on the other hand can exacerbate texture or fine lines on drier spots, like the cheeks. Also not desirable.

Instead, look for a formula that speaks to a balanced natural finish with water-based moisture, ensuring your skin looks fresh but not greasy. The MAKE UP FOR EVER HD-Skin Balancing & Perfecting Foundation was actually formulated for this exact purpose. It’s a lightweight cream that glides onto the skin, pulling in moisture thanks to hyaluronic acid, plus peptides and niacinamide for a refined skin texture. It’s also long-lasting and doesn’t oxidise (a huge issue for oilier skin types, tbh), and provides medium coverage that’s radiant but not shiny.

Also, there’s 41 shades and many different undertones, so you’re guaranteed to find your perfect match.

How to apply foundation for combination skin

This part is more open to your personal preferences. One important thing to note is skin prep. Don’t layer a bunch of rich, heavy milks, oils or creams. It’s equally important to not skip moisture or you risk foundation that creases or looks rough, patchy or dull.

Once skin prep is sorted, apply the HD-Skin Balancing & Perfecting Foundation with either a fluffy brush or a damp beauty blender. generally speaking, I find beauty blenders afford sheerer coverage and a slightly more dewy look. It’s my application method but a brush will also work to give you a flawless finish.
