Pardon us for jumping the gun a little bit, but last weekend might’ve been the official start of London summer. Apart from the beating sun and overflowing pubs, another tell-tale sign was the fashion, which got a little more free as the London uniform loosened up. Just look at cult rave spot The Cause, which hosted a bunch of untethered revellers at the weekend. All the signifiers of rave-ready summer style were there, from the high hemlines and wraparound shades, to low-slung denim and turquoise body jewellery. Elsewhere, other punters enjoyed the openair party in shrunken baby tees and baker boy caps, while one particularly outgoing raver declared themself ‘Blowjob Queen’ on a printed slogan boob tube.
The first party of the summer had come courtesy of LIVE FROM EARTH, the notorious Berlin collective that has birthed acts like HorsegiirL, DJ Gigola and Brutalismus 3000. Starting life as an anti-fascist Youtube channel in 2014, LIVE FROM EARTH soon evolved into a multi-disciplinary creative outlet, producing music videos and playing electrifying sets, now with their own quarterly residence at Berghain.
After playing the London day rave, we caught up with the collective – MCR-T, Endevour, Rada, DJ Gigola and Bauernfeind – to chat about visual identity, London crowds, and why fashion is still important to the club scene.
When did you first begin the collective, and what was the inspiration behind setting it up?
LIVE FROM EARTH: We emerged in 2014, in a moment of political and cultural urgency that still resonates. The founding moment was literally born out of protest. Lorenz met Max and Elias – founders of LIVE FROM EARTH – on a train ride back from an anti-far-right demonstration, hiding under a seat from the cops. What started as filming those protests and organising illegal raves quickly turned into something larger.
We launched a YouTube channel to show our point of view – outside of the usual far left bubble – and that evolved into creating music videos, building a collective, then a label, then a whole creative ecosystem. The inspiration was always rooted in autonomy, resistance, and the will to shape something beyond traditional structures. Without compromise, without permission.
And the story behind the name?
LIVE FROM EARTH: The name LIVE FROM EARTH came from that early YouTube channel. The idea was to send dispatches from our world, our lives – raw, unfiltered, immediate. It’s a grounded name. We’re not projecting fantasy, we’re showing what’s happening around us, as it unfolds. The name stuck because it felt true – both universal and personal, both urgent and poetic.
You guys have a really strong visual identity, as a collective but also as individuals. How important is fashion to the LIVE FROM EARTH experience?
LIVE FROM EARTH: We don’t really talk that much about fashion internally. It’s not like we sit down and say, ‘what’s our style?’ It’s just something that happens naturally. A lot of what people might read as fashion-forward is really just us making stuff we think is cool, or funny, or that we feel like wearing. Sometimes it’s merch, sometimes it’s not – and sometimes it’s just a t-shirt we made in five minutes.
Visually, we’ve always been independent – almost everything from clothing to graphics comes from us. At the same time, we find joy in long-term collaborations with people who think alike. We like having the freedom to do whatever we want, and not having to explain it. That’s what makes it fun. And for us, that freedom matters more than feeding an aesthetic market.
It’s not just about what you’re wearing, but how it makes you feel, and how it connects you to the moment – LIVE FROM EARTH
How would you describe the style of the people who come to your shows?
LIVE FROM EARTH: At our events, the style probably is all about individuality and freedom – there’s no uniform. People show up in whatever makes them feel comfortable, fun, or rebellious. You’ll definitely see a mix of streetwear, club fashion, and playful looks. Some might go all out with more extravagant outfits, while others keep it more simple. But at the end of the day, it’s not about fitting into a specific style – it’s about showing up and expressing yourself in a way that feels right for you. It’s fun, it’s unexpected, and it’s never about taking things too seriously.
Why do you think fashion and style are important to clubbing in general?
LIVE FROM EARTH: Style is a powerful way to express who you are and where you want to belong without words, and to create the energy around you. It’s not just about what you’re wearing, but how it makes you feel, and how it connects you to the moment. Whether that’s through fashion, music, or anything else, we’re all about supporting creativity in every form.
And finally, what’s your favourite thing about performing for London crowds?
LIVE FROM EARTH: London crowds are some of the best you can have. They are open, euphoric and down for the ride. London – but also the UK – has a rich musical history and landscape, and an established rave scene, so people are more open to different genres and are used to fully committing to the rave. That kind of openness and fun energy resembles so much of our own approach to music and creativity. So playing in London feels very close to home.
