Trump critics are stunned after Katie Zacharia is grilled by Sean Hannity over ‘lawyer’ claim: ‘Moving in for the kill’

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia got an unexpected grilling from Trump-pal Fox News anchor Sean Hannity about why she called herself an attorney when she never passed the bar exam, in a departure from the right-wing pundit’s usual kid-gloves questioning of Trump officials.
The interview left critics stunned and saying they had never seen the conservative presenter press a Republican, let alone a Trump White House official, so hard after Zacharia appeared on Hannity’s Thursday night show.
“Hannity is moving in for the kill,” observed journalist Aaron Rupar on X, while The Bulwark’s Will Sommer commented, “This is the toughest interview I’ve ever seen Sean Hannity give to a Republican.”
Zacharia, who touted herself as an attorney before landing the press secretary gig, was interviewed by Hannity after admitting she never passed the bar, which she revealed to another right-wing-friendly podcast earlier that day.
Hannity began by calling out Zacharia’s “widely panned” White House press briefing on Tuesday, which only lasted 14 minutes and in which she only took three questions. Zacharia explained that she was offered the role days before.
“What I feel is I really stepped up and to the plate to do the press conference, Sean, with very little prep time,” she said. “Given the fact that I’ve been on the job less than maybe eight hours and had a briefing book in the morning, I feel like I did my very best, Sean, to deliver for the American people that day.”
Hannity then homed in on how Zacharia has repeatedly been described as a “lawyer,” citing analysis by Popular Information journalist Judd Legum that she has been referred to as such during 18 appearances on Fox News since March 2025.
“You called it a ‘conspiracy theory’ as it related to the issue of being a lawyer,” Hannity said. “Now, you did go to Pepperdine. Pepperdine is a good school — no doubt about it. You took the bar exam, but you didn’t pass the bar exam. Correct?”
The Fox host then pressed Zacharia on whether she took the bar a second time but the press secretary began to ramble about getting married and moving to China.
“OK, but I wanna ask you specifically — I know that part of the story, and you did do all of that — but did you ever take the bar exam a second time or a third time?” Hannity asked.
“I did not, Sean,” Zacharia conceded.
Hannity then asked her, “Why not just say, ‘I went to Pepperdine Law School and then took a different career path’? Why get into this long drawn-out thing about the difference between a lawyer and an attorney?”
Zacharia said that she never provided legal advice and claimed she had consulted with legal professionals as to whether she could be labeled a lawyer when she appeared on TV.
The exchange was shocking to commentators who have observed Hannity over the years, with some speculating that his proximity to President Donald Trump had a hand in Zacharia’s grilling.
