Scientists warn that Doomsday glacier in Antarctica could collapse within 5 years

American scientists at the University of Oregon have discovered that the Thwaites glacier, located in West Antarctica, can become unstable and collapse within five years.

Experts believe that a complete “doomsday” collapse of the glacier may occur within a certain period of time, and this circumstance will cause the global sea level to rise by 0.6 meters.

The researchers analyzed a portion of the Thwaites glacier on the sea floor. The eastern ice shelf supports a third of the Thwaites glacier itself, and its collapse will cause the land portion to slide into the sea. In this regard, may increase in sea level rise by 25%.

Thwaites Glacier is one of the fastest changing glaciers in Antarctica. It got its name due to the fact that it is the fastest moving and most stable glacier in Antarctica.
