Guterres calls for the holding of the Libyan elections as soon as possible

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, praised the high turnout by the Libyan people for voter registration, which was represented by the receipt of 2.8 million electoral cards.

Guterres added that “this entails holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya, under certain conditions, in order to reach a peaceful political transition and transfer power to an elected democratic institution.”

Guterres also welcomed the commitment of the High National Elections Commission to the electoral process, and praised its recommendations submitted to the House of Representatives, according to the spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

He stressed that the Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya Stephanie Williams and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya will continue their efforts to confront the current challenges and ensure the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
