A new type of corona virus “deltacron” has been discovered in Cyprus

A new type of coronavirus “deltacron” has been discovered in Cyprus, which is a mixture of Delta and Omicron strains.
The discovery was made by a group of local scientists working in the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus.

According to the head of the lab, Leontios Kostrikis, researchers have dubbed the new version of COVID-19 “deltacron.”

According to him, the new variant of the virus has a genetic basis as “Delta”, but some of its mutations are similar to “Omicron”.

“We found a large number of mutations that were previously only detected during Omicron cases,” the specialist said.

As Kostrikis pointed out, “omicron” has 30 mutations, “10 of which were identified in samples taken in Cyprus.”

He added that the Deltacron strain was found in 25 samples taken from the island. At the same time, 11 of them were obtained from hospitalized people who showed symptoms of infection with the Corona virus, and the remaining 14 are from normal residents.
