Germany begins trial for Syrian doctor accused of torturing patients in hospital

The trial of a 36-year-old Syrian doctor has begun, before the Higher District Court in Frankfurt am Main, on charges of torturing patients in a military hospital who were opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Reuters reported.

The defendant, who is being tried under the nom de guerre Alaa M. He worked as a doctor in a military prison and hospitals in Homs and Damascus in 2011 and 2012.

In 2015, he came to Germany and worked as a doctor in several German clinics, and became one of 5,000 Syrian doctors who received a work visa in Germany.
In June 2020, he was arrested and placed in a reserve prison.

The detainee has two children. He denies these accusations.
