Surgeons discover the “womb and ovary” in a father of three children by chance- 

 

The hernia, about which an elderly man in Kosovo complained, turned out to be the uterus and ovaries, as a result of a violation of embryonic development. Doctors from the University of Pristina described this condition in more detail in an article in the journal Urology Case Reports.

 

A 67-year-old elderly man in Kosovo went to hospital with complaints of a swollen groin, which he had been experiencing for ten years. In addition, the patient has one testicle – but this did not prevent the man from becoming the father of three children.

 

After examining the patient, the doctors concluded that he had an inguinal hernia and decided to operate on him. However, during the operation, they found a uterus with a cervix, fallopian tubes, an ovary, and a testicle missing in formation.

 

The man was diagnosed with persistent Mullerian duct syndrome. Mullerian ducts are channels through which the uterus, fallopian tubes and part of the vagina are formed in women, and in men – the prostatic uterus and the appendix of the epididymis.

 

In the syndrome, both types of derivatives of Mullerian channels are present in the male body both genetically and physiologically. Usually the cause is a deficiency of anti-Müllerian hormone or receptor insensitivity to it.

 

In total, only about 200 cases of the syndrome are known, but in fact there may be more – the study of the syndrome began only in the twentieth century and is usually discovered by chance when a patient complains of an undescended testicle, hernia, or infertility.

 

Doctors haven’t had the opportunity to do genetic testing, but they recommend that other teams do it for patients with the same problem. It is also not known whether the man’s children are related to him.
