Discover effective drugs in the treatment of COVID-19

Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania conducted a study and discovered which combination of drugs is effective in treating COVID-19.

Experts screened 18,000 antiviral drugs using the human epithelial cell line Calu-3, a lung cancer cell tumor. Scientists have identified 122 drugs that have shown high antiviral activity and high selectivity against the Corona virus, including 16 nucleoside analogues.

Co-administration of pyrimidine biosynthesis inhibitors with nucleoside analogues, such as FDA-approved remdesivir and molnupiravir, appears to suppress coronavirus infection, according to the study.

The researchers also identified a group of nucleoside biosynthesis inhibitors, including the experimental drug brekinar, which blocks pyrimidine synthesis. They showed that the combination of brekinar and molnupiravir protected the lungs of rodents from infection and inflammation.

The study results were published in the journal Nature.
