Coffee does not provide extra energy

Contrary to popular belief, Indian nutritionist Pooja Mahija stated on Instagram, that coffee does not provide additional energy, but rather “borrows” it from the body.

She noted that the feeling of vitality and a rush of energy after a cup of coffee is related to the stimulating effect of caffeine, which, being a stimulant, prompts the body to use resources.

Caffeine is similar in structure to the sleep-inducing adenosine. The active substance in coffee that blocks the adenosine receptors in the brain causes feelings of euphoria. The body needs rest, creates new receptors and therefore wants to sleep more.
