Corsican separatist Yvan Colonna dies after attack in French prison

Corsican separatist Ivan Colonna, who was hospitalized after an attack in a French prison, succumbed to his injuries on the night of March 22.

The 61-year-old Colonna was attacked in early March in Arles prison after spending more than two weeks in a coma.

The attacker was an Islamist extremist. After the attack, riots swept Corsica.

Colonna was serving a life sentence in France for the murder of Corsica’s governor, Claude Irignac, on February 6, 1998.

On March 16, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the government was ready to discuss Corsica’s autonomy to ease tensions amid protracted protests.

The riots in Corsica have been going on for several weeks. The demonstrators also demanded recognition of the independence of Corsica, which is legally divided into two parts that are part of France. The territory has the status of a “special regional community”.
