Rory McIlroy had a great approach on No 10 to set up a birdie on his first hole of the day.

After a birdie for Doug Ghim on hole No 13 and a Luke Donald misfire on No 14, Ghim has taken the early lead at Valhalla with most of the field still prepping to tee off.

Tiger Woods had to settle for par on his first hole of the PGA Championship after missing a birdie opportunity on hole No 10 wide right.

Luke Donald is out to an early lead at Valhalla, at 2-under par through four holes. Doug Ghim and Matt Wallace (-1) are the only other golfers at the moment to be under par.

Rory McIlroy received a huge ovation from the crowd behind tee No 10 at Valhalla Golf Club to tee off first in his pairing with Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose.

Rory McIlroy is set to tee off at Valhalla in a few minutes, taking congratulations from fellow golfers for his win at the Wells Fargo Championship on the way to hole No 10.

A disastrous start for last year’s PGA Championship hero Michael Block, who bogeyed the first and has now carded an eight on the par-four second.

All eyes are Woods again this week (when aren’t they?), and he’s off in under 30 minutes…

It’s been 11 years since the Englishman finished inside the top 10 at a major championship, but it’s a birdie on 1 today. He tops the very, very early leaderboard.

So that’s Michael Block, Luke Donald and Shaun Micheel now heading out at 7:25am local time.

Before the golf gets underway, it would be remiss of us to not mention the story that has dominated the headlines leading into this tournament: Rory McIlroy’s divorce from his wife Erica Stoll.

Although the media were warned about questioning McIlroy on the subject, it’s fair to say it was a huge shock – with the news dropping just three days out from the start of play this morning.
