US decides not to deport Cameroonian refugees

Cameroonian nationals residing in the United States have been granted Temporary Protected Status (TSP), which provides protection against deportation and the right to a work permit.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made it clear that armed conflict continues in the country, there is an environmental disaster and violence from government forces and separatists. In addition, the activity of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram is increasing.

Minister of Homeland Security Alejandro Majorcas explained, “The United States recognizes the armed conflict in Cameroon and will provide temporary protection to those in need. Cameroonian citizens who are unable to return safely due to extreme violence by government forces and armed separatists, as well as an increase in Boko Haram attacks, will be able to stay and work in the United States until conditions in their homeland improve.”

The right to obtain status applies to Cameroonian nationals who are in the United States as of April 14. According to the New York Times, this number is close to 40,000 people.
