Kazakhstan’s president quits the country’s ruling party

The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zumart Tokayev, resigned from the powers of the head of the ruling Amanat Party.

“From today I decided to terminate my powers as head of the Amanat party and leave the party. This step is symbolic. I would like to thank you all for your trust and support in the presidential elections,” Tokayev said at an extraordinary conference of Amanat.

Tokayev proposed to nominate the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yerlan Kochanov, for the post of party chairman. The initiative was supported by the participants from “Amanat”.

Commenting on the results of the party’s extraordinary congress, State Minister of Kazakhstan Yerlan Karin said that Amanat will continue to support the country’s president.

He also noted that in January, when the president took over the party leadership position, he said he was accepting this position temporarily, until the end of the year.
