Secretary General "OPEC": The oil industry supports 70 million jobs globally

ABU DHABI, April 29 / WAM / Haitham Al Ghais, Secretary-General of OPEC, stressed that the oil and gas industry plays an important role in employment and supporting national economies globally by providing job opportunities for people not only with high skills and specialists, but it includes the entire supply chain and manufacturing. And transportation companies, hotels, and shops. The oil industry alone supports about 70 million jobs around the world.
He added that the oil industry provides opportunities for a wide range of companies spread throughout the world as it is the engine of economic opportunities and the home of drilling rigs, oil refineries, and petroleum universities, and there are “oil cities” all over the globe.
Al-Ghais pointed out that in the 2023 update of the roadmap for net zero, “carbon emissions,” the International Energy Agency expects the loss of 13 million jobs in fossil fuel-related industries between 2022 and 2030. This means the loss of 13 million jobs in an eight-year period, equivalent to 1.6 million. Approximately 135,000 jobs per month and 4,500 per day.

He noted that new jobs are supposed to be created in alternative industries but there are countless challenges and the transferability of job skill sets cannot be assumed.
He added that workers in the oil and gas sector are among the highest paid workers in any sector thanks to their high skill level, well-established labor representation and the need to compensate for occupational hazards and mobility requirements.
He stressed that OPEC’s message is clear and consistent regarding jobs in the oil industry, as the world needs more of them, and we expect demand for oil to grow to 116 million barrels per day by 2045. To achieve this and continue developing technologies to reduce emissions, we will need more workers.
