Some ingredients in cosmetics, household chemicals, and medicines can cause a sun allergy. First of all, we are talking about photosensitizers and photosensitizers.

Anna Zelkina, MD, a dermatologist, points out that what’s called a sun allergy, is actually an abnormal response of the skin to UV rays.

Allergy to the sun on the open areas of the body is manifested in the form of redness and swelling of the skin, a very small, itchy rash. Photosensitizers play a major role in this pathological skin reaction – substances that increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays.”

Photosensitizers, according to her, are found in many plants and herbs, in particular in parsley, celery, yarrow, St. John’s wort, figs, buckwheat, pine and lemon.

The cosmetologist added that this process in the skin of some people is carried out according to the mechanism of a delayed allergic reaction. In such cases, the allergen absorbs ultraviolet light and triggers an allergic reaction.

Photoallergens are often found in sunscreens, cosmetics, and perfumes, as well as soaps, shampoos, and household chemicals. Among the drugs, photosensitive allergens are found in external pain relievers with ketoprofen, some antibiotics, sedatives and antidepressants.
