Spain intends to obtain an exemption in the issue of reducing gas consumption

The Spanish authorities intend to make an exception for the country in the matter of reducing gas consumption within the framework of the European Commission’s plan.

El Pais reports, that Spain’s delegation, headed by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Environmental Transformation and Demographic Challenge Teresa Ribera, at the meeting of EU energy ministers on July 26, expects to make the European Commission’s plan more adaptable.

In particular, the kingdom wants to be allowed to reduce its gas consumption by 5-10%, not 15% as described in the European Commission’s plan.

The newspaper draws attention to the fact that Spain and Portugal, due to their geographical location, can be called the “Energy Island”.

For the European Commission to make concessions, these countries will have to show that they are using part of the infrastructure to deliver natural gas to other EU countries.

In Madrid, they believe that the Brussels plan could do great harm to Spain, as it could bring a number of industrial enterprises to a halt.

The Spanish authorities confirm that they can send 7% of the imported gas abroad, and Brussels is confident that such shipments can be increased to 20% or 30%.

On average, Spain consumes 22.9 billion cubic meters of gas (from August to March, with a target of 15% set by the European Commission, the Kingdom must reduce consumption by 3.4 billion cubic meters. Spain seeks to reduce this figure to 1.7 billion cubic meters.
