Craig Gillespie in talks to direct ‘Supergirl’ for DC

Things are moving –– or perhaps, given the main character, flying – forward for the ‘Supergirl’ movie. At least, yes DeadlineThe report ends up being successful.

Craig Gillespie, the director behind films like ‘I, Tonya’, ‘Cruella’ and, most recently, ‘Dumb Money’, is now in talks to direct the Kara Zor-El reboot for DC Studios.

What is the plan for the Supergirl movie?

While nothing has been formally confirmed, it appears that the character of Supergirl (with ‘House of the Dragon’s’ Milly Alcock in the role) will first appear in a cameo in James Gunn’s ‘Superman.’

He will then appear in his own film, which was announced alongside the rest of Gunn and Safran’s plan for the first wave of their new film and television universe.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a large-scale science fiction film based on the comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It features a “darker, tougher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving piece of Krypton who watches everyone around her die.

Here’s what Gunn said at the time of the announcement:

“This is a very different kind of Supergirl. In our movie, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents since, you know, when he was a baby, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock on Krypton and watched everyone around her. She died and was killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then she came to Earth when she was a child and is much tougher. “She’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

It would seem that the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ subtitle has disappeared, but it may return.

Who is doing ‘Supergirl’?

Ana Nogueira has been adapting the comic with some input from King. Other than her (plus production by Gunn and Peter Safran and DC executive vice president Chantal Nong executive producing), that’s it for the team so far.

Gillespie brings a lot of experience: he has directed several films with female characters at the center and is also an expert at balancing tone.

When will ‘Supergirl’ hit theaters?

Warner Bros. has not yet set a release date for the film; which is not a bad idea since there are no images of it yet. But the production plan is for ‘Supergirl’ to begin filming later this year once Gunn has completed work on ‘Superman’ and the studio’s focus can shift to the other ‘Super’ character.
