An explosion in a hydroelectric power station in central Italy left three dead and four missing on Tuesday April 9, according to a new report from firefighters on Wednesday morning. The prefecture of Bologna announced on Tuesday a report, ultimately erroneous, of four dead and five missing. “Research continues, the situation is complicated. The water is rising and our teams are studying the risks” linked to their intervention, the firefighters’ press service said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred at a facility operated by energy giant Enel on the Suviana artificial water reservoir, between Bologna and Florence. “It appears there was a collapse of the floor slab” said the mayor of the neighboring town of Camugnano. Rescue operations “are difficult, because a lot of water has penetrated inside the eighth floor of the basement.”

Earlier today, in a statement published by local media, the Italian group Enel Green Power, a subsidiary specializing in renewable energies of Enel, explained that“a fire broke out and affected a transformer at the hydroelectric power station”ensuring that “all security measures” were quickly activated in order to allow “proper evacuation of personnel” on the spot.

An Enel spokesperson later clarified that the dam was not damaged by the explosion. On the other hand, energy production was interrupted, without consequences on “electricity supply at local and national levels”. The head of the Italian government, Giorgia Meloni, declared on social networks what “followed with apprehension the terrible news about the explosion”.
