South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has promised “reforms”, Thursday April 11, after disastrous legislative elections for the conservative camp, which strengthened the opposition’s control over Parliament. “I will humbly honor the will of the people expressed in the general election, reform state affairs, and do my best to stabilize the economy and people’s livelihood.”declared the conservative leader, according to his chief of staff Lee Kwan-sup.

South Korea’s main opposition party has won the legislative elections, according to almost complete results reported by the Yonhap news agency on Thursday. A hard blow for Yoon Suk-yeol: his party, Power to the People, and his main ally went from 114 to 108 seats in Parliament, according to these almost final results.

The big winners are Lee Jae-myung’s Democratic Party (DP) and its allies. They saw their number of seats increase to 174, compared to 156 in the previous legislature. The Rebuild Korea party, founded a few weeks ago, took advantage of discontent with the two main parties to win 12 seats.

In line with the vote, Conservative Party leader Han Dong-hoon, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and a series of high-ranking aides submitted their resignations, according to local media. The opposition’s triumph, however, was less significant than exit polls suggested. The opposition parties combined did not in fact reach the supermajority of 200 seats in the National Assembly, which has 300.
