Boris Johnson and Bertrand Picard participate in the Green Hydrogen Summit in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 14 APRIL / WAM / Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar” announced the list of prominent international participants in the Green Hydrogen Summit, which includes His Excellency Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and ministers from the UAE, Azerbaijan, Japan and the Netherlands, in addition to an elite group of leaders. The second session of the Green Hydrogen Summit, hosted by Masdar under the title “Building a Hydrogen Economy: From Dialogue to Reality,” will be held on April 16 as part of the World Future Energy Summit activities being held in Abu Dhabi.

The summit will bring together prominent players in the global hydrogen sector with the aim of holding constructive discussions that contribute to accelerating the development of the green hydrogen sector in a way that supports the transformation process in the energy sector.

His Excellency Boris Johnson, who is participating in the summit as a keynote speaker, has extensive international experience in developing clean energy initiatives. During his tenure as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, he laid out plans to build an advanced low-carbon hydrogen sector as an essential part of the Kingdom’s transition towards achieving climate neutrality.

Dr. Bertrand Picard, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Climate Impulse Foundation, will also participate as a speaker at the summit, where he will highlight the progress made towards achieving his goal of making the first flight around the world in a hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Dr. Pickard’s achievements, through which he broke records, include his first non-stop balloon flight around the world, in addition to the “Solar Impulse” flight, the first flight around the world in a solar-powered plane.

The activities of the Green Hydrogen Summit will include a high-level ministerial session focusing on national strategies and policies aimed at accelerating the construction of green hydrogen economies.

The list of ministers participating in the session includes His Excellency Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Yoshida Nobuhiro, Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, and Frederik Wesselink, Special Envoy for Energy from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy of the Netherlands.

A dialogue session will also be organized to discuss Abu Dhabi’s innovative low-carbon hydrogen policy and its impact on vital industries, and will include speakers including His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, and Mohammed Abdul Qadir Al Ramahi, CEO of the Green Hydrogen Department at Masdar, along with a group of High-level partners.

The Green Hydrogen Summit will bring together participants from the public and private sectors, from policy makers and sector leaders to open-minded investors and entrepreneurs.

The summit activities will include a discussion session on “Financing the Transformation”, and will focus on the factors needed to make green hydrogen projects bankable, and will include Lina Othman, Managing Director and Head of Sustainable Finance at Standard Chartered Bank, and Dr. Michael Whiteley, Global Head of Clean Hydrogen at HSB. C, in addition to an elite group of global financial sector leaders.

A session will be held on the regional focus on developing green hydrogen economies in Asia, the United States and Europe, in which Daria Noshevnik, Director of Policy and Partnerships at the Hydrogen Council, will speak; Joaquín Rodriguez Jadraque, Director of Hydrogen and Clean Energy Department at CEPSA; and Alicia Eastman, host of All About Hydrogen and board member of InterContinental Energy.

Other sessions will highlight sectors from which emissions are difficult to mitigate, including the aviation, shipping and heavy industry sectors, while there will be a key session on decarbonising the steel sector with the participation of industry leaders, including Michael Ryon, Chief Commercial Officer of Emirates Steel “Arkan”.
