Iran’s strikes against Israel: why the intervention of several Arab countries can reshuffle the cards in the Middle East

Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din

While the Israeli war cabinet met Monday afternoon, April 15, for the second time since Iran’s attacks, Israel’s allies are pressing for restraint. One of the arguments that could encourage Benyamin Netanyahu’s government not to compete is the possibility of a regional alliance, including with Arab countries. Ties were weakened after the October 7 attack and the Israeli military response against Gaza. But this weekend’s attack could reshuffle the cards.

This defensive belt around Israel during last weekend’s attack is one of the positive points for the Jewish state. The anti-aircraft device, which was wanted by the United States, destroyed most of the missiles and drones before they even arrived in Israeli airspace. America dragged along Britain, France and Arab countries. According to the American press, other countries, including Saudi Arabia, have shared intelligence, radar images and opened their airspace.

But these Arab countries, apart from Jordan, are more discreet. After the war in Yemen which created an anti-Iran front, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates moved closer to the Mullahs’ regime, which today threatens to attack Israel’s supporters.

Only Jordan has assumed this alignment. But for the Jordanian regime, this intervention is an internal risk because more than half of the population is Palestinian. The demonstrations were already significant before this attack to denounce the Israeli military operation in Gaza. But the kingdom seems to have relied on American support to ensure its stability in this very uncertain environment.
