Urgent.. 4 dead and dozens trapped under the rubble when a building under construction collapsed in South Africa

At least four construction workers were killed while about 50 of their colleagues were still trapped under the rubble following the collapse of a building under construction in the coastal city of George in South Africa on Monday, according to what the authorities announced.

The municipality of George announced the incident. About 400 kilometers east of Cape Town, 24 people were recovered from the rubble and most of them were taken to hospital. Four of them died as a result of their injuries.

And “51 people” remain in detention. Trapped under the rubble, according to what the municipality explained in a statement published on Monday night – Tuesday.

According to the city’s municipality spokeswoman, Chantal Edwards, "a team of 75 workers who were at the site when the collapse" The building that was under construction.

For his part, the spokesman for the non-governmental organization “Gift of Givers” said: Mario Ferreira, from the scene of the accident, told Agence France-Presse that rescue team members “contacted some people under the rubble.”

The five-story building, including an underground parking lot, collapsed on Monday afternoon.

The causes of the collapse were not immediately clear.

The building was now leveled to the ground, according to photos published by the municipality of the accident site, where many rescue personnel were deployed, supported by trained dogs sent from Cape Town.
