A huge fire consumes half of the old building of the Copenhagen Stock Exchange

Copenhagen, April 16 / WAM / Danish emergency services were able today to control the fire that broke out in the historic building of the Old Copenhagen Stock Exchange, which dates back to the seventeenth century, and led to the collapse of its famous 54-meter tower.

The fire caused half of the stock exchange building to collapse, according to the fire department. About 135 firefighters, as well as emergency workers and volunteers, were deployed to extinguish the fire.

The Copenhagen Stock Exchange, which is close to Christian Borg Palace, the seat of parliament and government, was built by order of King Christian IV between 1619 and 1640, making it one of the oldest buildings in the city.

The building contains a large collection of artworks, and is undergoing renovation work on the 400th anniversary of its construction.
