"FAO" : The state of food insecurity has reached terrifying levels in Sudan

Geneva, April 16 / WAM / The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned of the extremely alarming levels of food insecurity in Sudan, especially in hard-to-reach areas, one year after the outbreak of the conflict there.

Adam Yao, the organization’s representative in Sudan, said during a press conference on Tuesday in Geneva that the reality reveals that nearly 18 million people face severe levels of food insecurity, including 4.9 million who are at high risk of falling into catastrophic levels if the conflict continues and no provision is provided. Humanitarian assistance.

He explained that the conflict in Sudan is brutally undermining agricultural production, putting people’s livelihoods at risk. He said that with up to 60 to 80 percent of the total population relying on agriculture or engaging in it to earn their income, the repercussions are nothing less than devastating.

The international organization explained that according to the preliminary results of the annual report of the annual assessment of crops and food supplies in Sudan, grain production witnessed a decline of 46% from the previous year and about 40% less than the average of the previous five years. It said that the lack of security during the growing season in West Darfur state led to Crop failure completely, and she pointed out that with the main planting season approaching, providing critical support for emergency production of the main local staple grains is not only necessary but imperative, warning that failure to do so may lead to new levels of hunger that exceed the ability to alleviate them. .

The representative of the United Nations said that it is urgently seeking $104 million to boost food production and help the agricultural sector in Sudan recover before the conflict destroys the gains planted by generations, and stressed that the support that the Sudanese people need is urgent and non-negotiable.
