Algeria: A draft Security Council resolution on accepting Palestine’s membership will be put to a vote tomorrow

   Algeria announced that the draft UN Security Council resolution, according to which the Council recommends to the General Assembly to accept the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations, has been placed in blue; This is a procedure that means that it is now ready to be put to a vote, and no amendments or changes to its wording may be made, for a period of at least 24 hours.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated – in a statement today, Wednesday – that the voting session on this draft resolution It will be tomorrow evening, Thursday, and it is a step that received strong support from the Arab Group in New York, as it came after efforts made by Algerian diplomacy.

In New York, the Arab Group in New York issued a statement, in which it expressed its “steadfast and firm” support. To request the State of Palestine for full membership in the United Nations, stressing that it is a long-awaited step that should have been taken not only since 2011, but since 1948.

The Arab group also called on members of the Security Council to vote in favor of the draft resolution submitted by Algeria. It called on Council members not to obstruct this crucial initiative.

The Arab Group stressed – in its statement – that membership in the United Nations; A decisive step in the right direction towards a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue. In line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

It warned that the denial of Palestine’s legitimate status in the UN forum has continued for a longer period than it should, and that the time has come to correct this historical mistake and realize the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to Self-determination, sovereignty and establishment of one’s own state.
