“We will make our own decisions”

Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din

Israel will make its own decisions on how to defend itself, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday, as Western countries called for restraint in response to a series of attacks by Iran. About it reports Reuters.

The United States, the European Union and the Group of Seven industrialized countries are considering tightening sanctions on Iran. At the same time, Western allies would like to reassure Israel and convince it to restrain a retaliatory strike.

Iran attacked Israel in response to an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus on April 1. Israel and its allies shot down almost all the missiles and drones, with no fatalities.

Israel says it must retaliate to maintain confidence in its deterrent. Iran considers the matter closed but will retaliate again if Israel does so.

Late Wednesday, the Israeli Air Force said its fighter jets struck “terrorist infrastructure” of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in eastern Lebanon. This has raised concerns about a possible further escalation of clashes on Israel’s northern border.

Earlier, Netanyahu met with the foreign ministers of Germany and Great Britain. Both ministers visited Israel as part of coordinated efforts to prevent the confrontation between Israel and Iran from escalating into a regional conflict.

Netanyahu’s office said he thanked Annalena Baerbock and David Cameron for their support. The Israeli prime minister also told representatives of allied countries: “I want to make it clear – we will make our own decisions, and the State of Israel will do everything necessary to protect itself.”
