Representative of the Palestinian President to the United Nations: We have the full right to self-determination on our land, Palestine

The Special Representative of the Palestinian President to the United Nations, Ziyad Abu Amr, confirmed that the plight of the Palestinian people, which began more than a century ago, still exists. The Palestinian people were victims of international events and decisions that were not of their own making, and yearn for… Exercising their right to self-determination and to live in freedom, security and peace in an independent state like the rest of the peoples of the world; This is what the people made great sacrifices for.

Abu Amr said – in his speech during the monthly UN Security Council session on developments in the Middle East, today, Thursday – “Since 1988, the leadership of the Palestinian people, represented by… The Palestine Liberation Organization, the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, is fully prepared to turn the page on the conflict and sit at the negotiating table to find a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue. In this context, it has gone to great lengths and made historic concessions that were unimaginable in order to achieve peace based on the two-state solution. In order to ensure the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and a solution to the Palestinian refugee issue on the basis of Resolution No. 194, a state that lives with its neighbors in security and peace.

He added that “the Palestinian leadership has taken the Since 1993, the path of negotiations has been conducted in the hope that it will lead to the desired solution. The international community has supported the principle of the two-state solution, and this position culminated in the acceptance of the State of Palestine as an observer member in the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. Since then, the State of Palestine has been seeking and demanding that the world accept it as a full member of the international organization. Because of our firm belief that an international resolution in this regard protects the two-state solution and embodies the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to an independent state, but unfortunately there were those who blocked such a decision unlawfully and under false pretexts.”

He continued, granting Palestine full membership in The United Nations would lift part of the historical injustice to which successive generations of the Palestinian people have been exposed and are being exposed, and would open wide horizons for achieving a true peace based on justice for all countries and peoples of the region. He said: “In this context, we have the right to ask how the recognition of the State of Palestine harms us.” Granting it full membership in the United Nations, like the rest of the world, with opportunities to achieve peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis? How does this recognition and membership harm international security and peace?"

The Palestinian President’s representative to the United Nations explained, in his speech, that Israel did not fulfill its obligations when it was accepted for membership in the United Nations, which was to implement Resolutions 181 and 194, regarding The two-state solution.

He certainly stated that the decision to grant Palestine full membership would in fact constitute an important pillar of achieving peace in the region because the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, with its various effects, has now gone beyond the borders of Palestine and Israel and is extending to other places in our region, the Middle East, and the world. He stressed that the time has come for the Security Council to bear the historical responsibility of doing justice to the Palestinian people by adopting a resolution requiring Palestine to be accepted as a full member state in the United Nations, indicating that obstructing this resolution will not help in promoting peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis in Middle East.

He stressed that this decision will not be a substitute for serious political negotiations within a specific time frame to implement the two-state solution and the relevant international resolutions and resolve the remaining issues between the two sides, explaining, “This decision will give the Palestinians hope.” A decent life within the framework of an independent state after this hope was dashed due to the intransigence of Israel, which began to publicly and blatantly confirm its rejection of this solution, especially after the devastating war that the Gaza Strip was subjected to and its re-occupation.

Abu Amr thanked the countries that recognized the state. Palestine, calling on other countries to adopt an international resolution in this regard that protects the two-state solution.
